Mohit Chauhan is a indie pop and playback singer who is known for his melodious and soulful voice. He was born on 11 March 1966 in Sirmaur district located at Himachal Pradesh. Mohit was known for forming the band Silk Route which were extremely famous for their albums ‘Boondein’ and ‘Pehchan’.
Mohit studied at the St. Xavier's School in Delhi and then again moved to Himachal Pradesh to complete his education. He went to college in Bilaspur, Mandi, and Nahan and later graduated with a Master of Science in Geology from the Dharmashala University in Himachal Pradesh. Mohit was never formally trained in music but learnt to play the guitar, harmonica and the flute. After his education he moved to Delhi in 1996 and formed the band Silk Route with his schoolmate Kem Trevedi.
Silk Route had made their mark by releasing two hit albums- Boondein in 1998 and Pehchan in 2000. Mohit Chauhan and the band had their first big break with the song “Dooba Dooba” . The song was an instant hit and received wide airplay for its ‘underwater’ video. The album featured songs in Hindi, English, and Pahadi, and the band won several awards at the Channel V awards in the year 1998. Years Later Mohit got an opportunity to compose and sing in films for the song”Guncha”in 2005 from the movie “Main, Meri Patni Aur Woh”. It was with ‘Rang De Basanti’ that his career got a boost for singing “Khoon Chala” which was composed by Rahman. In 2007, the song Tum Se Hi’which was composed by Pritam for the movie ‘Jab We Met’ gave Mohit his much deserved success. In 2010, the song ‘Masakali’ which was composed by A R Rahman from the movie Delhi-6 was a big hit and Mohit won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer
Mohit released “Kalam”, an album of Dr Kalams poems in 2008 and then released “Fitoor” his debut solo album in 2009. Mohit has also sung a Bengali song for the movie “Sedin Dekha Hoyechilo”. He had started composing jingles when he first moved to Delhi and continues to lend his voice to many advertisements and other language movies today.
