Nitin Mukesh is a Hindi film playback and bhajan singer. He is the son of the legendary Bollywood singer, Mukesh. He was born in Mumbai on June 27, 1950. Nitin’s basic training in music was under musicians like Pt. Jagannath Mishra, Ustad Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan and Chhote Iqbal. He sang a couple of lines in the English song "With A Cheer, Not A Tear In Your Eye" in Shankar–Jaikishan’s "Mera Naam Joker" (1970).
Shyamji Ghanshyamji gave Nitin his first break in “Dhuan Ki Lakeer” (1974) where he sang a duet, “Teri Jheel Se Gehri Aankhon Mein” with Vani Jayaram. His first release as a full-fledged singer was Salil Chowdhary’s “Sabse Bada Sukh” (1972).
During the 1970s, Nitin Mukesh sang sparingly - a line in Shankar - Jaikishan’s “Do Jhoot”, couple of low-budget movies with Shyamji Ghanshyamji, a multi-singer song in R.D. Burman’s “Trimurti” (1974) and a song in Kalyanji – Anandji’s “Nasbandi” (1978). His first solo song was in Sapan Chakravarty’s “Jab Andhera Hota Hai” (1974).
When he sang three hit duets with Lata Mangeshkar, he began to get noticed in the industry towards the end of the seventies. Those songs were “Main Kaise Usse Pasand Karoon” (“Satyam Shivam Sundaram”, 1978), “Gapuji Gapuji Gum Gum” (“Trishul”, 1978) and “Aja Re Aaja Re O Mere Dilbar Aaja” from “Noorie” (1979).
Eighties made him popular with Laxmikant–Pyarelal’s “Kranti” (1981) for “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi”, Khaiyyam’s “Nakhuda” (1981) for “Tumhare Palkon Ki”, Shiv–Hari’s “Chaandni” (1989) for “Tu Mujhe Suna”, Rajesh Roshan’s “Khudgarz” (1987) for “Zindagi Ka Naam Dosti” and “Yahin Kahin Jiyara Hamar”, “Khoon Bhari Maang” (1988) for “Hanste Hanste”, Laxmikant Pyarelal’s “Ram Lakhan” (1989) for “One Two ka Four” and “Tezaab” (1988) for “So Gaya Ye Jahan.”
Though there were hits to his name in the nineties, he soon lost appeal and has now moved on to devotional albums and shows.
He is married to Nishi and has two children, Neha and Neil Nitin Mukesh (the actor).
