While this song won Chitra the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1997, the original Tamil version of this Ilaiyaraja song, "Inji Iduppazhaga" ("Thevar Magan", 1992), also got S. Janaki the same award in 1993.
This song was adapted from the Tamil film song "Inji Iduppazhaga" ("Thevar Magan", 1992) composed by Ilaiyaraaja. In the music session for the original Tamil song, Kamal Haasan had told composer Ilaiyaraaja that he wanted a song like "Yeh Dil Deewana Hai" ("Ishq Par Zor Nahin", 1970). It was using this S.D. Burman song as a reference that Ilaiyaraaja composed the Tamil film song.[1][2][3]
