Trivia

  • Shailendra won the first Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist for this song. This was the first year of this award category as well as the Best Playback Singer category. Till this song, Filmfare only had a Best Music Director award in the music category. The two new categories were instituted when Lata Mangeshkar boycotted the previous year's Filmfare Awards function and demanded separate awards for artists other than music directors. The first Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer went to Lata Mangeshkar for "Aaja Re Pardesi" ("Madhumati", 1958).[1][MR3]
  • Dilip Kumar, on whom this song was to be picturized, wanted his favourite singer Talat Mahmood to sing it but the song was eventually sung by Mukesh on music director Shankar - Jaikishan's insistence.[MR3]
  • The title of this song was inspired by a line music director Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi used to use while talking about music - "It's my passion".[MR6]
  • The tune of the opening line of this song was similar to that of another Hindi film song released the same year - "Dekh Hamen Awaz Na Dena" ("Amar Deep", 1958). According to film journalist Raju Bharatan, both songs had the same source in folk music.[2][MR4]
