Trivia

    Album

  • The film was based on the real-life story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, the amateur wrestler from Haryana who trained and mentored his two daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat, to become world-class wrestlers.
  • Aamir Khan first met the Phogat sisters even before this film was offered to him. Their first interaction was for an episode of the TV show "Satyamev Jayate" that aired in October 2014. Director Nitesh Tiwari approached Khan for the film a few months after this.[1]
  • Aamir Khan's physical transformations for this film became a topic of discussion after the makers of the film published a video describing it. The actor reportedly gained weight first to play the role of the elderly Mahavir Singh Phogat. He weighed 96 kgs at this point. He then dieted and exercised to get to a fit 68 kgs to play Phogat as a young wrestler.[2]
  • The film featured several debutant actors in prominent roles - Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar, Aparshakti Khurana, and Ritvik Sahore.
  • The film became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. It was very successful in China where it was released with the title "Shuai Jiao Baba" (English: "Let's Wrestle Father"). It became the most successful non-Hollywood foreign film to be ever released in China. Fuelled in large part by its success in China, it became the first Indian film to gross more than Rs. 2000 crores worldwide.[3][4][5]
  • Aamir Khan's comments about what some saw as "growing intolerance" in India triggered calls to boycott this film. While speaking at the function for the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in November 2015, Aamir said that he "was alarmed" by what he saw happening in the country. Speaking about a conversation with his wife Kiran Rao, he said, "When I chat with Kiran at home, she says 'Should we move out of India?' That's a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be.". This was followed by a public debate over the fairness of his comments. There were calls on social media to boycott this film as a mark of protest. The boycott call was supported by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and some senior leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.[6][7][8]
  • Akshay Kumar's National Film Award for Best Actor for "Rustom" (2016) was met with criticism. Many felt that there were other actors more deserving of the award. When asked why Aamir Khan did not win the award for this film, the head of the National Film Award jury Priyadarshan said that they did consider him since he had a policy of not accepting awards.[9][10][11]
  • P.R. Kadam, Geeta Phogat's coach in the film played by Girish Kulkarni, was portrayed negatively. This did not go down well with her real-life coach P.R. Sondhi, on whom the film's character was based. He specifically denied locking up Mahavir Phogat in a room as depicted in the film. Aamir Khan acknowledged that the film was a dramatised version of real events and included some fiction.[12][13]

    Song

  • Haanikaarak Bapu (Bapu Sehat Ke Liye Tu To Haanikarak Hai) - The lyrics of this song were written before its tune was composed. Amitabh Bhattacharya came up with the song's catchy title while brainstorming with producer Aamir Khan and music director Pritam at Aamir's bungalow in Panchgani. They considered several options to describe Khan's character in the film but were not happy with any of them - "Phas gaye re bapu", "Hitler bapu", "Bapu Mogambo", and "Hunter wala bapu". Finally, it was while taking a smoke break that Amitabh Bhattacharya spotted the statutory warning on the cigarette pack and came up with the song's title.[14]
  • Haanikaarak Bapu (Bapu Sehat Ke Liye Tu To Haanikarak Hai) - Amitabh Bhattacharya adapted the mukhda of a Sahir Ludhianvi song from the film "Ankhen" (1960) for the opening lines of this song. "Gairon pe karam apnon pe sitam / Ae jaane-e-wafa yeh zulm na kar" in the original song became "Auron pe karam bachchon pe sitam / Re bapu mere yeh zulm na kar" in this song.[15]
