Album

• This was one of the two films Anil Kapoor signed on the night of the premiere of his film "Mashaal" (1984). The other film he signed was "Janbaaz" (1986).[1][2]
• This was Anil Kapoor's first big hit as a solo lead. The actor credited the film for changing his life.[3]
• The huge success of this film resulted in it being remade in Telugu as "Vijrumbhana" (1986), in Tamil as "Oru Thayin Sabhatham" (1987) and in Kannada as "Yuddha Kaanda" (1989).
• This film was titled "Shatranj" initially. It was originally supposed to be directed by Ramesh Sippy and have Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. Javed Akhtar, who wrote the film, had recommended Anil Kapoor for the role in the film that was eventually played by Javed Jaffrey. The film was later taken over by Subhash Ghai and Anil Kapoor replaced Amitabh Bachchan as the film's hero.[4]
• This was the last film that Subhash Ghai directed but did not produce.
