Trivia

    Album

  • The film was conceived in the late 1940s and was originally titled "Gharonda". Raj Kapoor had envisioned it with himself, Nargis, and Dilip Kumar in the lead roles. However, the project did not take off for a long time. When Kapoor revived the project in 1962, Nargis had retired and Vyjayanthimala was cast in her place. Kapoor's initial picks for the second male lead - Dilip Kumar first and Dev Anand next - did not materialise for various reasons and he eventually opted for Rajendra Kumar.[1]
  • This was Raj Kapoor's first film as a director in almost a decade. The last film he had directed before this was "Shree 420" (1955). He did produce a few films in the interim but did not direct them. This was Kapoor's first film in colour.[2]
  • This was the first Indian film to be shot in Switzerland. It triggered a spate of Indian films in the years to come that used foreign locales.
  • Prem Chopra had a line in the film "Souten" (1983) - "Main woh bala hoon jo sheeshe ko patthar se todta hoon" - which was very popular. Jeevan had used a similar line, "Main woh bala hoon sheeshe ko patthar se tod doon", several times in the film "Chandni Chowk" (1954). Jeevan's delivery of this line was in a singing voice. Raj Kapoor also used the same line in this film in the scene in which he meets Rajendra Kumar after returning from the war.[3][4]
  • With a runtime of 238 minutes, this was one of the longest Hindi films of all time. Raj Kapoor released the film with two intervals keeping its length in mind. His next film, "Mera Naam Joker" (1970), was even longer at 255 minutes.[5]

    Song

  • Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega Woh Gaana Gaayega - The accordion in this song was played by Sumit Mitra.[6]
  • Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padh Kar - The opening lines of this song were reportedly from a letter Jaikishan wrote to his fiance in Gujarati.[MR6]
  • Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padh Kar - Jaikishan revealed in a Filmfare article that he had composed this popular song by himself. Shankar was unhappy about this since it breached their agreement to not reveal to the public their individual contribution to a song. The duo's relationship was already strained due to Shankar's inclination to use Sharda instead of Lata Mangeshkar for his songs. This article deepened their rift further.[MR15]
  • Main Ka Karoon Ram Mujhe Buddha Mil Gaya - Lata Mangeshkar thought that the lyrics of this song were vulgar and argued with Hasrat Jaipuri about it. She eventually sang the song but decided not to see the film.[MR7]
  • Ich Liebe Dich I Love You - The refrain "Ich Liebe Dich" in the song is German for "I Love You".
  • Dost Dost Naa Raha Pyar Pyar Naa Raha - Music director Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi himself played the prominent piano solos in this song.[7]
