The film was based on Narayan Sanyal's Bengali novel of the same title.
This was the second of the two films Hrishikesh Mukherjee made in quick succession that featured Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles, had dialogues written by Rajinder Singh Bedi, and featured Kaifi Azmi's song lyrics. The first film was "Anupama" (1966).[1]
Filmmaker K. Balachander remade this film in Tamil as "Punnagai" (1971).
Filmmaker Ranjit Kapoor's dedications for his debut film "Chintu Ji" (2009) included Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the director of this film, Dharmendra, its lead actor, and Narendra Sanyal, the writer of the novel on which the film was based.[2]
