Trivia

  • There was a lot of improvisation involved in the scene preceding this song as well as the choice of the song itself. During a trip to Europe, director Imtiaz Ali had witnessed a girl crying disconsolately in public. This real-life incident had inspired him to write the scene into the film. According to Imtiaz, it was a half-written scene that Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone improvised upon. The scene took an emotional toll on Deepika and the director had to keep a close eye on her while shooting it. Every time she came close to breaking down, Imtiaz Ali cut shots even when they were going well. The film's crew considered three different compositions by A.R. Rahman before choosing the one that was used to shoot the song sequence after this scene. The sequence was shot to everyone's satisfaction and Deepika particularly liked the song very much. However, Rahman asked Imtiaz if they could try another composition for the sequence. Imtiaz didn't mind trying since the song was not lip-synced and he already had a sequence ready in case the new song didn't work. As it turned out, it was this song that made the final cut. The song and the scene preceding it became two of the most talked-about things from the film.[1]
