Trivia

    Album

  • This album featured retro music which evoked the sounds of the 1960s. This was Tushar Bhatia's only film as a music director.
  • This film failed at the box office but gained the status of a cult comedy classic over the years.
  • The idea for this film was born when producer Vinay Sinha approached Rajkumar Santoshi to make a film with Aamir Khan. Having made two serious films back-to-back - "Ghayal" (1990) and "Damini" (1993) - Rajkumar Santoshi decided to make a comedy for a change.[1]
  • This film was in the making for 3 years.
  • The son of actor Ajit, Shehzad Khan, had a role modelled after the villains his father had played in the past.
  • While Aamir Khan and Salman Khan's characters were named Amar and Prem after the film "Amar Prem" (1971), Raveena Tandon and Karishma Kapoor's characters were named after the actresses themselves.[2]
  • Some of the scenes and plot points in this film were adapted from various Tamil films, including "Thenmazhai" (1966), "Bommalattam" (1966) and "Adimai Penn" (1969).
  • This film made references to several Hindi films, "Sholay" (1975), being primary among them.[3]
  • Tinu Anand was the original choice for the character of Crime Master Gogo in this film. In fact, Anand had even shot for the film for three days and contributed to the quirks and punchlines of this character. However, he could not continue working on it due to some issues with schedules and Shakti Kapoor was brought in instead of him.[4]
  • Mehmood's character in this film was the proprietor of a film production company called Wah Wah Productions. This was a reference to Mehmood's character in the film "Pyar Kiye Jaa" (1966).[5]

    Song

  • Ello Ji Sanam Hum Aa Gaye - This song was a tribute to composer O.P. Nayyar who popularized the tonga rhythm in Hindi film music. In fact, the song situation was inspired by a tonga song by Nayyar - the title song of "Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon" (1963). In the 1963 song, Joy Mukerji's character is disguised as a "tonga wallah" and makes off with the heroine (Asha Parekh) after tricking Rajendra Nath's character into getting off the tonga. In this song, Amir Khan tricks Salman Khan into getting off the tonga and rides away with Raveena Tandon.[6]
  • Jaana Tune Jaana Nahin - This song did not feature in the film but was part of its audio release.
