Trivia

    Album

  • The film told the fictionalised story of a battle fought during the India China war of 1962. It was dedicated to the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who led India during the 1962 war and who passed away during the film's making. The film was also dedicated to the soldiers who died during the war. The dedication in the film read, "The film is dedicated in all humility to the late Shri Jawaharlal Nehru who always was and still remains the source of inspiration for all such efforts. And to those of his soldiers who laid down their lives in defence of their country fighting against the aggressors in Ladakh in October 1962. The story begins in July 1962 when the Chinese aggression seemed unthinkable and ends in November 1962 when the first attack was over and the second was just a few days away. The story deals only with happenings in Ladakh". The dedication was displayed in Hindi as well. Made with the assistance of the Indian government, the film is considered to be one of the best and most authentic war films made in India.
  • Indian communists, who traditionally looked upon China favourably, felt betrayed by their unprovoked attack on India in 1962. As a result, many artists of the Communist Party-affiliated Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) offered their services for this film without a fee. These artists included filmmaker Chetan Anand, actor Balraj Sahni, art director M.S. Sathyu, lyricist Kaifi Azmi and his wife, actress Shaukat Azmi.[1]
  • This was filmmaker Chetan Anand's first film with music director Madan Mohan. Anand was so pleased with its music that he chose Madan Mohan for all his future productions, till the music director passed away in 1975. There was one exception in this period, "Aakhri Khat" (1966), which was composed by Khayyam because Madan Mohan was not available at that time. Chetan Anand and Madan Mohan's last film together was "Sahib Bahadur" (1976). Lyricist Kaifi Azmi also became a steady member of Chetan Anand's films during this period.[2][3][4]
  • Madan Mohan was elated when he was offered an acting role in the film. En route to Ladakh, where the shoot was planned, he stopped over at Chandigarh and got stranded there when flights were cancelled due to bad weather. Eventually, filmmaker Chetan Anand himself ended up playing the role that was planned for Madan Mohan.[5]
  • This was actor Mac Mohan's debut Hindi film. It appears that he was wrongly credited in it as Brij Mohan instead of his real name Mohan Makhijani. The actor, who was nicknamed Macky by his friends, was referred to as Mac Mohan by the Filmfare editor L.P. Rao in his review of the film. The name stuck. After being credited as Brij Mohan in a few films, he was credited as Mac for the first time in "Shagird" (1967) and eventually as Mac Mohan starting in 1971.[6][7]
  • The film "Guide" (1965) originally had Chetan Anand at the helm. He got the opportunity to dedicate himself to this pet project of his only after Vijay Anand replaced him as the director of "Guide" (1965). This was the first film produced by Chetan Anand's Himalaya Films banner.[8][9]
  • This was actress Priya Rajvansh's debut Hindi film. It was Chetan Anand's wife Uma who spotted Priya at a function in Chandigarh and asked her to get in touch with her husband for acting opportunities. The budding actress had other plans and enrolled herself at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London instead. When she contacted Chetan Anand after finishing her acting course at RADA, the filmmaker immediately offered her the role of Heer in "Heer Raanjha" (1970). However, "Heer Raanjha" (1970) was delayed and this became her first film release. Priya and Chetan Anand became good friends by the time "Heer Raanjha" (1970) was released. Anand separated from Uma but never married Priya despite having a close relationship with her till his death in 1997. Priya died three years later in unfortunate circumstances.[10][11]

    Song

  • Main Yeh Soch Kar Uske Dar Se Utha Tha - The prominent violin solo in this song was played by Pyarelal Sharma of the Laxmikant - Pyarelal composer duo.[12]
  • Main Yeh Soch Kar Uske Dar Se Utha Tha - The lyrics of this song were not written for this film. Kaifi Azmi had written this deeply personal poem many years ago. He used the poem later for the film "Panchayat" (1958) and repurposed it again for this film.[13][MR10]
  • Khelo Naa Mere Dil Se - This song, among Madan Mohan's favourites, was not included in the film to keep its run time in check.[14]
  • Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bhulaya Hoga - This song was Bhupinder's debut as a playback singer in Hindi films. He also acted in the film and appeared on the screen for the song. As a newcomer, he got a chance to sing with three veterans - Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mahmood, and Manna Dey. The song had four antaras, one sung by each singer. Bhupinder lip-synced Rafi's opening lines in the song's mukhda as well as the first antara, which he himself sang.
