Trivia

    Album

  • This film was Chetan Anand's remake of his own film "Afsar" (1950) - the film that launched the Navketan Films banner. Both films had Dev Anand in the lead role. "Afsar" (1950) was an adaptation of the satirical play "The Government Inspector" by the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. This was one of the two films - the other being "Jaaneman" (1976) - in which Chetan and Dev collaborated after a period of twenty years. They had developed differences during the making of "Funtoosh" (1956) and parted ways after it. This was the last released film in which Chetan Anand directed Dev Anand, ending a partnership that had started with "Afsar" (1950).[1][2][3][MR52]
  • The audio records of this film were issued in 1976, but the film was released in 1977. The film was allegedly held up by the Censor Board due to its depiction of corruption in the bureaucracy. According to Vijay Anand, the film languished for six months at the behest of the Information and Broadcasting Minister V.C. Shukla before it was certified.[4]
  • This was among the last films for which Madan Mohan composed the music. It was also his last musical score for Chetan Anand. Their partnership had started with the film "Haqeeqat" (1964). Anand had been pleased with the composer's work in it that he had retained him for all his future films except "Aakhri Khat" (1964), during whose making Madan Mohan was unavailable. The music director passed away during the making of this film. While all the songs in the film were his, its background score was recorded by his assistants Ghanshyam and R.L. Suri.[5][6][7]

    Song

  • Raahi Tha Main Aawara - Madan Mohan had composed this song a month before his death but passed away before recording it. Since Kishore Kumar was very busy, the music director was unable to get time from him to record the song. A little frustrated, he sent Kishore a recording of the song in his voice followed by a message - "Aye Bangali, mera gaana dhyaan se sunna, aur rehearse karke aana, aur kharab nahin karna". Kishore Kumar recorded the song after Madan Mohan's death.[8]
