Producer Karan Johar said in an interview that the film almost didn't get made. It was put on hold for a year after six actors rejected the role of the closeted gay man played by Fawad Khan eventually. Fawad accepted the film after the likes of Farhan Akhtar, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Shahid Kapoor had rejected it. The film went on to become a critical and commercial success. Fawad Khan's performance, in particular, drew widespread praise.[1][2]
Rishi Kapoor revealed in an interview that he had a very difficult time working in this film. He had serious differences with director Shakun Batra who would ask him to perform the same scene multiple times to shoot it from different angles. His constant arguments with Batra over this and the hours he had to spend every day to wear prosthetics and makeup made the film's shooting a very difficult one for him. He even thought about quitting midway but carried on in the end. Kapoor's role as an 80-year-old man was praised by critics and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.[3]
Song
Kar Gayi Chull - This was a recreated version of a Haryanvi non-film song recorded by Badshah and Fazilpuria in 2014. It was Fazilpuria's debut Hindi film song.[4]
Buddhu Sa Mann - Rishi Kapoor appeared in this song with a cutout of actress Mandakini from the famous bathing scene in "Ram Teri Ganga Maili" (1985). This was part of a running gag in the film in which Rishi Kapoor's character was depicted as an ardent Mandakini fan. "Ram Teri Ganga Maili" (1985) was directed by his father Raj Kapoor and featured his brother Rajeev Kapoor in the lead role.[5]
Let's Nacho - The track was a recreated version of the song "Tamil Fever" recorded by Benny Dayal and Nucleya in 2014.[6]
