  • This film was based on the real-life story of activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi. Azmi got his law degree during the seven years he spent in Tihar jail under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act. After his release from jail, he started practicing law in Mumbai. Most of his cases involved the defense of those accused of terrorism and who he believed were falsely implicated. He was the nephew of a prominent politician of the Samajwadi Party, Abu Azmi, who was a Rajya Sabha MP from 2002 to 2008 and a Maharashtra state MLA from 2009 onwards. Shahid Azmi was assassinated by unknown assailants in 2010. The family members of Shahid agreed to help Hansal Mehta understand his life and work, but on the condition that the film would not have any song and dance sequences. Mehta accepted the condition. The film did have a song that was used in its opening and end credits.[1]
  • The film had a scene in which the film's eponymous character was assaulted and his face blackened. Some of the film's posters carried images of actor Raj Kumar's blackened face prominently. This scene and the film's poster were inspired by a real-life experience of Hansal Mehta. More than a decade ago, Mehta was assaulted by a group of people who were protesting against some lines used in his film "Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!" (2000). His clothes were torn and he was splattered with black ink despite apologising and assuring them that he would remove the lines from the film.[2][3]
  • Not satisfied with a scene in which the character he played in the film was being interrogated, actor Raj Kumar suggested that the scene be shot with him completely naked. He believed that this would help him better emote the humiliation experienced by his character.[4]
  • Shahid Azmi had represented the petitioners in a court case that had sought to stay the release of the film "Black Friday" (2007) till the verdict of the 1993 Bombay Blast case was pronounced. Their contention was that, if released, the film would prejudice the blast trial. Ironically, Anurag Kashyap, who had directed "Black Friday" (2007), was one of the producers of this film.[5][6]
  • In 2017, the writer of this film, Sameer Gautam, took to social media to accuse Apurva Asrani of doing to him what he accused Kangana Ranaut of doing for the film "Simran" (2017) - stealing his writing credit. Asrani was the editor of this film. According to Gautam, Asrani threatened to stop editing the film till director Hansal Mehta agreed to credit him as an additional writer.[7][8]
  • This was the debut Hindi film of music director Karan Kulkarni.
