Trivia

    Album

  • This was the directorial debut of R.K. Nayyar. He landed the film based on the recommendation of I.S. Johar, whom he had assisted in "Miss India" (1957). It also launched producer Sashadhar Mukherjee's son Joy Mukherjee. Sadhana, whom Nayyar had seen in the Sindhi film "Abana" (1958), was chosen as the film's heroine. This was her first Hindi film in a lead role. The film's opening credits billed Joy Mukherjee and Sadhana as "Sensational New Stars". R.K. Nayyar went on to marry Sadhana in 1966. They worked together in one more film after this - "Intaquam" (1969).[1][2][3]
  • The success of this film spawned a series of "Love In..." films with Joy Mukherjee in the lead role. The two films that followed it were "Love In Tokyo" (1966) and "Love In Bombay" (1974).[4][5]
  • R.K. Nayyar wanted Sadhana to don a hairdo that concealed her broad forehead in her debut appearance. Several hairstyles and wigs were tried but nothing worked. Nayyar finally came up with the idea of the famous fringe cut Audrey Hepburn wore in "Roman Holiday" (1953). Sadhana was reluctant since she was not sure if the Western hairstyle would suit an Indian but went along with it. The results were spectacular and Sadhana became the talk of the town. Her hairstyle in the film set a new fashion trend and came to be known as the Sadhana Cut.[6]
  • The film told the story of a plain-looking woman who is ill-treated by her family members and decides to transform her appearance to seduce a handsome man. This premise was inspired by a play director R.K. Nayyar had seen called "Jane Steps Out". The play was based on a 1938 British film of the same title, which in turn may have been inspired by the folk tale of Cinderella.[7]
  • Dharmendra auditioned for the film's lead role but was not selected. On actress Sadhana's 80th birth anniversary, the actor reminisced that he went on to do just one film with her - "Ishq Par Zor Nahin" (1970).[8][9]
  • The film showed Sadhana's character winning the Miss Simla contest and being awarded, among other things, a 3-year contract with the Filmalaya banner. This mirrored real-life in part - Sadhana actually had a 3-year contract with the production house which paid her Rs. 750 per month in the first year, Rs. 1500 per month in the second year, and Rs. 3000 per month in the third year. She did another film with Filmalaya after this - "Ek Musafir Ek Hasina" (1962).[10][11]
  • The film's opening credits listed playback singer Suman Kalyanpur by her maiden name, Suman Hemadi, even though she got married in 1958. She was credited as Suman Kalyanpur on the music records.
