Trivia

    Album

  • This was the debut film for Shiv - Hari as music directors. Both were already famous Hindustani classical musicians - Shivkumar Sharma played the santoor and Hariprasad Chaurasia was a flautist.
  • Javed Akhtar started his career as a lyricist in this film. Before this film, he was mainly known as one half of the scriptwriter duo of Salim - Javed. Akhtar had earlier written a song for the film "Kahan Kahan Se Guzar Gaya" (1981), but the film did not have a music release.[1]
  • The lyrics of the mukhda of the film song "Neeche Phoolon Ki Dukan Oopar Gori Ka Makaan" ("Joru Ka Ghulam", 2000) may have been inspired by a song sung by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in this film. The song went "Neeche paan ki dukaan oopar gori ka makaan..". This wasn't a full-fledged song - it had just a few lines and was not set to music.[2]
  • This film created a buzz for its casting coup - Amitabh Bachchan was cast opposite his wife Jaya Bachchan and his rumoured lover, Rekha in an onscreen love triangle. However, this wasn't the film's original cast. Yash Chopra had initially signed Smita Patil and Parveen Babi for this film. When Amitabh Bachchan had probed him about the casting, Chopra had said that he would have ideally wanted Jaya Bachchan and Rekha instead. Bachchan responded that he would be fine with this casting if he could convince the actresses to come on board. It was then that Jaya Bachchan replaced Smita Patil and Rekha replaced Parveen Babi. Babi accepted the decision with equanimity but Smita Patil was unhappy because instead of talking to her himself, Yash Chopra had sent Shashi Kapoor to break the news to her.[3]
  • Jaya Bachchan took a long break from acting after this film. Her next film "Hazar Chaurasi Ki Ma" (1998) came 17 years later.[4]
  • Jaya Bachchan's next film with her husband Amitabh Bachchan came 20 years later - "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" (2001).[5]
  • This was the last film in which Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan were paired together in leading roles. The two actors did appear in two films after this, "Soorma Bhopali" (1988) and "Shamitabh" (2015), but not as leading pairs.[6][7]
  • Although the film's music was a big success, the film itself was panned by critics and flopped at the box office. However, years later, it went on to be hailed as a classic.
  • Shiv - Hari developed a background theme in this film into the song "Zindagi Har Janam" ("Vijay", 1988).[8]

    Song

  • Dekha Ek Khwab To (Happy) - This song is remembered for its picturesque locales. Part of the song was shot in the tulip gardens of Keukenhof in Netherlands and part of it was shot in Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir.
  • Dekha Ek Khwab To (Happy) - The tune of this song's mukhda appears to have been adapted from the Dogri folk song "Baathri Da Aaya Banjara Ho". This folk song was recorded by the Indian politician and a descendent of the royal Dogra dynasty, Dr. Karan Singh, for an album titled "Dogri Lok Geet".[9]
  • Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum - The lines "Tum hoti to kaisa hota..." recited by Amitabh Bachchan in this song were originally written by Javed Akhtar for his poem titled "Banjara".
  • Rang Barse Bheege Chunarwali - Amitabh Bachchan used to sing the folk songs on which this song and "Mere Angne Mein" ("Laawaris", 1981) were based at his house every Holi. Yash Chopra heard him sing it once and asked him to sing a version of it for this film. Amitabh's father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was credited for the song's lyrics. The folk tune on which this song was based was used previously in another Holi song "Holi Khele Nandlala Biraj Mein" ("Rahi", 1953).[10][11][12]
  • Ladki Hai Ya Shola - The tune of this song's mukhda may have been inspired by the Dogri folk song "Jammu Diya Kandiya". This folk song was recorded by the Indian politician and a descendent of the royal Dogra dynasty, Dr. Karan Singh, for an album titled "Dogri Lok Geet".[13]
  • Neela Aasman So Gaya (Male) - This song was based on a folk-inspired tune Shammi Kapoor had composed, and performed with Amitabh Bachchan, during the private music sessions they had while working for the film "Zameer" (1974). Amitabh Bachchan took Shammi Kapoor's permission to use his tune in this song.[14][MR15]
  • Sar Se Sarke Sarke Chunariya - This was lyricist Hasan Kamal's first Hindi film song in more than a decade. After debuting in "Bambai Raat Ki Bahon Mein" (1967), Kamal took a long break from films to focus on his career as a journalist at the Urdu edition of the Blitz magazine.[15][16]
  • Jo Tum Todo Piya - This Meera bhajan was Pandit Shivkumar Sharma's tribute to a version he had recorded many years ago for the film "Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje" (1955). Sharma began his career in Hindi films as an assistant to Vasant Desai in the 1955 film. Lata Mangeshkar sang the bhajan in both the films.[17]
